A standardized achievement test score may tell us that a student is struggling in comparison to peers, but does not tell us WHY. Therefore, even when evidence-based interventions are implemented, improvement may be minimal because it is not the right intervention. An analysis of a student's pattern of cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses can guide hypothesis testing and planned interventions at any step of the assessment and intervention process.
